The United States welcomes reports that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) appears to have reached agreement on a way forward towards restoring constitutional rule of law and democratic principles to Guinea-Bissau.


We welcome ECOWAS’ negotiated appointment of Manuel Serifo Nhamadjo as leader of a transitional government.  We call on all stakeholders to accept him and work together towards bringing stability, rule of law, democracy, prosperity, and respect for human rights to Guinea-Bissau.

We look forward to learning further details.  Much work must be done in the transition to create a timely action plan that respects constitutional law and includes all national stakeholders.  Efforts to reach a negotiated solution should be exhausted before considering other options.
